A scam is currently doing the rounds under the guise of our highly successful Fuel Rewards campaign where customers may receive up to 15% back when they purchase fuel with certain FNB cards.

Through this scam people are being requested to provide their details in order to receive fuel rewards. The email is nothing more than a phishing scam that has been circulating under different guises for several years. The scammer hopes to obtain the victim's banking and login details in order to defraud him/her.

FNB advises that no action apart from swiping your qualifying card is required to receive FNB Fuel Rewards.

FNB will NEVER ask for your banking details. FNB will also NEVER ask for your PIN or Internet Banking login details. Any request for such information is a scam.

FNB home page phishing scam


Fraudsters often send fake emails or set up fake web sites that mimic the sign-in pages of trusted companies.


When you receive an email requesting you to select a link, you can do the following to verify if the email can be trusted:

- Make sure the 'From' address is from a trusted source. The email address from the actual sender will display in brackets next to the short url (see note 1).

- Hover over the address for the actual link to display (see note 2). In this case the short url and actual link differ. This indicates possible phishing.

Remember, FNB will never ask you to select a link to login to your banking profile, or ask you for your login details (username and password).



What happens if you do select a phishing link

You will be re-directed to a fake site that mimics the FNB website

What you can do to verify if this is a fake site or the actual FNB website

Check the url in the addressbar. It must display: https://www.fnb.co.za/

While you are attempting to login from a phishing home page the fraudsters get hold of your login details.

Next, you are presented with a security verification screen. In the meantime, the fraudsters login to your account with the details they have intercepted and do a transaction.



When their transaction needs to be verified with a One Time PIN (OTP) you will be presented with a screen requesting you to enter the OTP you received.

When you enter the OTP on this screen, the fraudsters will be in a position to finalise the transaction from their side.


eBucks wallet statement scam


Fraudsters often send fake emails or set up fake websites that mimic the sign-in pages of trusted companies.

We will never send you an email with an attachment* requesting you to go to any of our product pages or to login to your banking profile.


At an ATM


Do

  • Report suspicious items or people around ATMs to the bank.
  • Familiarise yourself with the look and feel of the ATM so that you are able to identify any foreign objects attached to it.
  • Follow the instructions on the ATM screen carefully.
  • Cancel the transaction immediately if you are disturbed or distracted.
  • Change your PIN if you believe it has been compromised.
  • Memorise your PIN and keep it confidential, never write it down or share it with anyone, not even with your family members or a bank official.
  • Choose a PIN that will not be easily guessed. Do not use your date of birth as a PIN.
  • Cover your PIN when punching it in to prevent shoulder surfing.
  • Secure your card and your cash in your wallet, handbag or pocket before leaving the ATM.
  • Should your card be retained by an ATM, contact your bank and block your card before you leave the ATM.

Don't

  • Do not request or accept help from anyone outside the branch.
  • Never force your card into the slot as it might have been tampered with.
  • Don't use ATMs where the card slot, keypad or screen has been tampered with.
  • Avoid withdrawing large sums of cash.

Guard against card skimming


Do

  • Review your account statements on a regular basis; query disputed transactions with your bank immediately.
  • Read your card details when it is given back to you after every purchase.
  • Shred your card receipts before discarding them.
  • Only the person whose name appears on the front of the card is authorised to use it.
  • Always check transaction slips for correct purchase amounts before you sign them and check them against your statement to spot any suspicious transactions and query them immediately.
  • Store your bank's call centre number on your cellphone so that you have it handy should you need to stop your card.
  • Subscribe to your bank's SMS notification services; this will inform you of any transactional activity on your account.

Don't

  • Don't let the card out of your sight when making payments.
  • If you have debit, cheque and credit cards, don't choose the same PIN for them all, so that if you lose one, the others will still be safe.

When online


Do

  • Always type in the URL: https://www.fnb.co.za
  • Memorise your username and password, never write it down or share it with anyone, not even with a bank official.
  • Choose an unusual username and password that are hard to guess and change them often.
  • Make sure your username and password cannot be seen when you enter them (shoulder surfing).
  • Inform the bank should your cellphone number change so that your cellphone notification contact number is updated on its systems.
  • If reception on your cellphone is lost, check what the problem could be immediately as you could have been the victim of an illegal SIM swop on your number. If confirmed, notify your bank immediately.
  • Only make purchases with your card on reputable websites with addresses that starts with https:// and look for the lock image on the toolbar.
  • Install a spam blocker on your system. This will ensure that fraudsters find it difficult to send you phishing e-mails.

Don't

  • Do not access the bank's website via Google search as it might lead you to a spoofed site.
  • Do not use web links that are saved under your favorites.
  • Don't use internet cafes or unsecure terminals (hotels, conference centers, etc.) to do your banking.
  • Never open suspicious or unfamiliar emails or attachments as these often contain harmful programs.
  • Never allow any website of a merchant to save your personal and banking details.
  • When the option presents itself, always remember to select 'No'.

Guard against shoulder surfing


Do

  • Always be aware of the people around you when entering or accessing your personal information.
  • Shield the keypad while entering your PIN.
  • Use reflectors at ATMs to observe people who are in close proximity to you at an ATM.
  • Where possible when using personal devices find an area where you can sit or stand with your back to the wall.
  • Change passwords and PINs immediately if you suspect that someone has observed you entering that information.

Don't

  • Don't continue conversations with people when you are entering/typing passwords or PINs.
  • Don't verbalise passwords or PINs.
  • Don't expose your card numbers as people can memorise or take photos and videos of them.
  • Avoid long queues and busy areas to reduce the number of people have the opportunity to shoulder surf.

Guard against identity theft


Do

  • Store personal and financial documentation safely.
  • When destroying personal information, either shred or burn it.
  • Pay attention to account cycles so that you can identify when communications intended for you, have not reached you.
  • Verify all requests for personal information.
  • Report stolen ID or driver's license to the South African Police and on the SAFPS (South African Fraud Prevention Services) website immediately.
  • Install firewall and antivirus software protection to prevent a computer virus sending out personal information from your computer.
  • Request that sensitive documents be sent via registered mail or door-to-door mail.

Don't

  • Don't carry unnecessary personal information in your wallet or purse.
  • Don't give out personal information on the phone, fax or on social media platforms.

  • Be cautious of company names with web based email addresses e.g. junkmail@yahoo.com, @hotmail.com, @gmail.com, @ymail.com

  • Don't make refunds without first verifying with the bank that the deposit that has been made into your account is
  • Don't give potential buyers/sellers money for anything else except for the item that interests you.

Latest vishing (telephonic) scam

Mobile network operator and FNB Cellphone Banking

In the latest scam fraudsters do the following:

  1. They phone the client and pretend to be from the client's mobile network operator
  2. The client is informed that someone attempted to do a SIM swap on their cellphone number
  3. During the call the fraudsters try to gain as much information as possible to do a SIM swap on the client's cellphone number
  4. Next, they inform the client that they will contact the bank on their behalf to advise the bank of what happened

After a while, a fraudster, pretending to be from FNB, will phone the client informing them that the mobile network operator has contacted the bank asking them for assistance as someone attempted to do a SIM swap on one of their clients' cellphone numbers.

During this conversation the fraudsters will attempt to do the following, as they often have personal information of the client that makes the request seem genuine:

  1. They will try to get the client's personal identification number (PIN) and other personal access details of their Cellphone Banking profile
  2. Should they not succeed in getting these details the fraudsters will ask the client for their 5-digit Cellphone Banking PIN (CB PIN) to be used as 'reference number' for the call
  3. Clients often give the fraudsters their CB PIN as they know this number by heart
  4. Next, they ask the client for their card and PIN number
  5. The client will then be requested to turn off their cellphone for the next two hours. This will ensure that the client does not receive the SMS for the SIM swap or any subsequent SMSs of activities performed on their account. In the meantime, the fraudsters are at liberty to transact on the client's account
