Trade Ideas

Local Trade Idea: OUTsurance Group (OUT) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein & Jalpa Bhoolia.

OUTsurance Group is an investment holding company. It holds a diversified portfolio of strategic investments in some of South Africa's premier insurance and finance brands including a 90% stake in OUTsurance. In Australia, Youi provides car, home, business and compulsory third-party insurance. OUTsurance Ireland is due to launch this year.

Technically, a strong and consistent uptrend makes for an attractive investment opportunity (refer to the insert).

A consistent uptrend usually reflects strong company fundamentals or positive market sentiment about the sector and typically boosts investor confidence. This can, in turn, lead to increased buying activity and trigger a FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) response among investors. It may also appeal to more risk-averse investors due to lower levels of volatility.

Fading downside price momentum according the MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) histogram supports the trade idea. As downward momentum slows, it signals a shift in market sentiment, and can result in increased buying activity, thus boosting the share price.

According to the RSI (Relative Strength Index), the stock will be overbought at ~R53.00, which classifies our profit target of R50.00 as realistic.

We suggest a low to medium capital at-risk allocation to this trade. Increase exposure for a break above R44.

Buy/Sell Rationale

Technical Analysis:

  • The lower panel shows the bullish trend period indicator (measured in weeks).
  • A growing bullish trend indicates increasing momentum. As the trend strengthens, investor confidence improves, which is likely to attract market participants, thus driving the share price higher.
  • The share remains above its 200-day and 200-month simple moving averages. The 200-day is around R38.56.
  • The recent sideways trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator indicates that money remains in the share.
  • The RSI is in oversold territory when the reading is below 30 and overbought when the reading is above 70. The current reading of the RSI is 57, leaving enough room to the upside.
  • Our entry range is between around R41 to R44. Our upside target is set at R50 (+17.6% from current levels).
  • Time to exit is early-May 2025. Keep the option open to close the trade if the price reaches our profit target in a shorter time.
  • A price below R39 (-8.2% from current levels) is a major concern for downside potential and is recommended as a stop-loss.

Long-term fundamental view:

  • OUTsurance has been a strong performer in the local market and has consistently gained market share in the past.
  • The company offers geographical diversification through its presence in Australia. We also like the pending expansion into Ireland - economic growth is strong, and insurance rates are low.
  • It is now a pure short-term insurance specialist that will help investors with a bias for short term as opposed to long term insurance express their views through ownership of the company.
  • The collapsing of the RMI structure and individual listing of OUTsurance will improve efficiency at a head-office level.
  • The company released results for the year ended 30 June 2023, in September last year. A robust bottom-line performance was driven by strong earnings from the Australian business, Youi. New initiatives in SA and Australia did well.
  • The increased dividend with an additional special dividend was a highlight, coming in ahead of consensus.
  • Risk to our fundamental view include further material deterioration in the South African macroeconomic environment, regulatory pressure, and growing competition. OUTsurance has a low free-float, therefore liquidity remains a risk. Short-term insurers are particularly vulnerable to weather-related events and other uncontrollable factors.
