Established in 1999, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in South Africa has been crucial in ensuring that our roads are safe and efficient. Born out of the need to address the escalating road accidents and fatalities, the RTMC was created to coordinate and oversee various aspects of road traffic management.
Their duties include services such as drivers licence renewals, booking for learners licence tests, bookings for drivers licence tests, PRDP applications and motor vehicle licence renewals. With a blend of technology, education and enforcement, the RTMC strives for smoother journeys, making them an indispensable force for the nation's motorists.
Time for a different route
When COVID-19 hit South Africa in 2020, it became clear to the RTMC that they needed to take a digital and cashless direction within their business. They realised how important convenience and safety was for the public during this period because it was the only way to reach a wider market. The RTMC also noticed that in the past, some driving license testing centres and registration offices would be opened in areas that weren't ideal for people travelling with public transport, so it was already hard for those people to reach their centres, but with the spread of COVID-19, matters became worse. Another point of concern was that many of their driving license testing centres and registration offices only operated during the week, meaning a lot of people had to sacrifice their working time for assistance.
One of the biggest challenges that they faced, however, is corruption. People would queue for hours without assistance, while other people got assistance without waiting due to their level of influence. These are just some of the matters that the RTMC aimed to resolve by looking for an alternative solution.
A push in the right direction
With a strong vision in mind, the RTMC decided to look for a financial partner that could help them go cashless. Being a technology-driven entity, they wanted to partner with a company that has invested within the technological space, but they were also looking for a company that was reliable. So, after COVID-19, they appointed FNB as their official partner and introduced online transactions that made it easy for people to pay for their vehicle license renewal and shortly after that, people could pay for their driver's license renewals and driving tests online as well. FNB built an e-commerce platform for the RTMC to allow motorists to pay using their card regardless of the bank they use. Furthermore, the public can also have their licence disc delivered to the address of their choice or have it printed at any driver's license testing centre they choose.
Since partnering with FNB on this journey, RTMC has noticed improvements such as an advanced level of security, cash management no longer being an issue, there's better control over finances and possibilities of fraud have also been eliminated. RTMC also states that they've been banking with FNB for years and currently use them for their day-to-day online banking which has been a smooth and seamless experience.
