Introduction

Investing in individual shares can be daunting but carries with it the exciting possibility of making money.

Apart from buying an individual share in a company, there are also other ways of gaining exposure to shares. Some of these are:

Exchange Traded or Tracker Funds (ETFs)	Unit Trusts
Description
An investor buys shares (units) in the tracker fund, and the fund buys shares in all (or as closely as possible) the companies listed in a particular share market index .	An investor buys shares (units) in the fund, and the fund buys shares in companies listed in the stock exchange.
ETFs allow investors to be exposed to a number of shares in the market but at a low cost. Diversified investment. The shares that are included in the ETF are predetermined, so investors don't need to decide which particular shares they wish to own, which is useful for the first time investor. The performance of the ETF should track the index. You earn dividends, the same as if you owned the shares, usually paid out quarterly.	Unit trusts are actively managed by a portfolio manager whose aim is to achieve returns that beat inflation and the performance of the All Share Index. Diversified investment.
