Be inspired by the uniquely African story of Imbizo Shisanyama
MaZwane is a name that commands respect in a competitive industry. Rita Zwane is the founder of Imbizo Shisanyama, one of South Africa's most acclaimed African cuisine restaurants. Founded in 1997, the popular Imbizo Shisanyama restaurants are the culmination of a life-long dream that came to life in a tiny shipping container in Tembisa township.
For her customers who may not know Rita's story, it's one of authentic African culinary experiences, a tale that captures their imagination - and keeps them coming back for more. And with Rita's son now bravely building on the legacy, this is a story of African success - a creative concept that even attracts global guests.
Breaking down barriers
Rita's journey was far from easy. There were financial constraints, public perceptions and legal challenges to overcome from day one. She sought out financial banking for her business plan at a time in a fledgeling democracy when few avenues for funding led to a township. In 1997, she found help from an unexpected source - a bank manager who was willing to visit a township to assess business viability. Back then the concept of funding a commercialised Shisanyama was non-existent, almost impossible, until we took a chance on this bold dream. Rita and her FNB bank manager could see what few others could: the appeal of African food beyond its humble origins.
To ensure the long-term viability of her business model and to secure the livelihoods of others in her community, Rita felt compelled to transform the entire food and beverage landscape. She helped usher in changes in South Africa's livestock value chain and even challenged unfair alcohol laws. This meant confronting many gender biases, while sacrificing time and energy to champion the rights of many. Her efforts paid off and her business flourished.
Building on the legacy
In 2007 Rita secured an FNB Business loan of close to R2 million to finish her building premises and purchase equipment for the restaurant. As both a leader and avid learner she embraced the business, investment and insurance guidance she also received from us.
'The business partnership I have with FNB is empowering and enabling. It's great to be associated with a bank that cares and understand one's business to give the appropriate and relevant advice' says Rita.
Today, as always, Rita continues to be an inspiration to a new generation of entrepreneurs with her bursary programmes and soup kitchens initiatives - that's why we help.
